MD80系列是美国原麦克唐纳·道格拉斯公司从DC9－50客机发展来的中短程客机。1977年10月开始研制，初定名为DC9-80，属于对DC9－50的加长改进型，80表示预计投入运营的时间为1980年。第一架原型机1979年10月首次试飞，1980年8月获美国联邦航空局适航证，同年9月交付使用。1983年6月，原麦克唐纳·道格拉斯公司放弃著名的DC商用飞机商标，改称MD，这样DC9-80系列就变更为MD80系列。

　　与DC9－50相比，MD-80系列主要的改进是机身加长，翼展加大，采用更大推力的发动机和先进的机载设备，降低了耗油率和噪音。MD80系列客机和波音737、 A320一样，是80～90年代畅销的中短程客机。目前已停止生产,共生产近1200架。 

    MD83是MD82的长航程版本。

Affectionately called the “Mad Dog”, the MD-80 has been critical piece of the carrier’s success since it started service 1999. Allegiant’s innovative business model, of which the MD-80 fleet played an important part, has helped take more than 80 million passengers to their destinations across the country. In commemoration of Allegiant’s retirement of the MD-80 as it transitions to an all-Airbus fleet, these PlaneTags we commissioned to celebrate the aircraft’s nearly 20 years of service to the airline.
